AgTech Seeds Cohort 2 Case Study – Harveston Aeration Solutions

6 May 2024

Innovation: Developing technologies to reduce post harvest losses in grains, nuts and seeds using ambient air in an enclosed environment to manage temperature and particularly moisture content. This technology has been shown to cost effectively dry and store significantly wet product while preventing the deterioration of product quality.

Andrew has extensive business experience which helped him create Harveston Aeration Solutions. He built  Harveston Aeration Solutions from merely an idea in September 2022 to an established company, operating in  Albury, NSW. The idea spawned because of an industry wide issue wherein nuts, grains and seeds are traditionally  left to dry on the ground. This environment lacks sufficient control and creates significant risks in exposure to post  harvest damage due to moisture, temperature and predation from vertebrate and invertebrate pests. Co-founded  with Mark White, a biomechanical engineer, undertaking his doctorate studies in agricultural aeration at UniSA. Andrew and Mark had previously worked together which fostered a common interest in aeration solutions which  produced their passion project Harveston. While Mark did not undertake the RocketSeeder program, he did read  over much of the content but could not undergo the program due to other commitments.

Andrew said the program was “very, very insightful” as it gave Andrew the opportunity to reflect on his initial Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Through contemplation, Andrew understood that he had done too much for his MVP. Thanks to the program Andrew was able to better comprehend the aims of an MVP, what it is trying to achieve and the role patents can play.

Networking through the program has been incredible, within the first week, Nicki connected Andrew with AgVic.  Initially after discussion, the partnership looked primarily at research. As the partnership progressed however, it turned into a showcase using one of Ag Vic’s Smart Farm’s to demonstrate the benefits and efficacy. Industry access was extremely beneficial and has been key to Harveston’s development as they look to continuously speak with farmers so that their product is fit for purpose. The program since allowed Andrew to leverage connections and progress his ideas, allowing continued growth and development.

Looking forward, Andrew has been “Working through the completion of the commercial product”. With a focus on being market ready, while working around growing season dates, a lot of effort is going into R&D so that the product is ready for orders.

Extensive research has been very beneficial for Andrew as it has promoted product modification to suit grower needs. Innovation has been crucial to Harveston and Andrew has a history of innovation and adaptability.  Andrew’s skillset is frequently on show through his diverse role with Harveston. Andrew’s drive is on show as he is very energetic despite their “always” being something to do.

Pictured below is a demonstration ring used at the Ag Vic Smart Farm, it is a scaled down version of the commercial offering, it was purpose made to suit the farm size and research being undertaken.
